Creating the Perfect URL

Navigation:

The navigation of your website should be based on validated (http://validator.w3.org/) HTML and CSS. If JavaScript is being used for the navigation then there should be a HTML alternative contained within a <noscript> tag.

The navigation you choose should be built with a flat structure. If possible you want to try and ensure a maximum of 3 clicks to all key pages.

URL Structure:

To help with SEO, your URLs should include the target keywords in the page name. The words in the file name should be separated using hyphens and you should aim to keep everything in lower case.

Further, your pages should be nested under their relevant categories, meaning the structure should look something like the below example:

www.yourwebsite.com/relevant-category/page-name-with-keyword

Internal Linking:

Each landing page should contain a number of links that point to other key pages on your website.

Often a sidebar or top level menu are the most popular choices, however feel free to experiment with a range of buttons or images in different colours and places on the landing page, doing this will help you build the relevant page flow.

Footer Links:

We recommend that you minimise links contained in the footer (maximum 12 links), focusing just on the key pages of your business website, such as ‘contact us’, a main service or product page and links to your social profiles to be placed on every page. These links should be changeable and not over optimised with keywords.
